All Hands On Deck Ship

Compared to other Elon enterprises X and Tesla, SpaceX flies a bit under the radar, especially for a company valued at a whopping $180B and has such lofty ambitions.

But now, it’s time to check in on and celebrate one of the world’s greatest companies. Thankfully, Elon hosted a SpaceX all-hands meeting to do exactly that.

On the celebratory side, SpaceX had, by any measure, an amazing 2023. 96 flights for their Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, 2 Starship test flights, and a tripling of Starlink’s space internet traffic. 

2024 looks to be more of the same. Elon is aiming for 140 Falcon launches and 10 Starship test flights, while Starlink is now offering cellphone towers in space.

Now, let’s zero in on Starship. Test flight 2 was a definite improvement over test flight 1. The super heavy boosters (the actual rockets) worked flawlessly until blowing up while attempting to guide themselves down to a controlled splashdown, while the Starship (the upper half) died right before making it to orbit. Now we know why.

As Elon puts it:

Elon says he thinks Starship has a very good chance of reaching orbit next time around. We’ll find out if he’s right when Starship takes flight again in a few weeks.

The Big Picture: Of all of Elon’s achievements, SpaceX may very well be the greatest. And they aren’t done yet.
