Gene Editing Intelligence

It’s been a slow couple of days news wise, so I thought I’d share something positively mind blowing.

The possibility of us making ourselves smarter via gene editing.

Here’s the skinny:

• There’s about 20,000 genes that affect intelligence, of which we’ve identified 500, although we could definitely ID more.

• Why can’t you just edit the IQ-decreasing genes to be…not that?

• It sounds nutso, but we’ve been able to edit about 60% of the neurons in a mouse’s brain.

• If you could give the average brain cell 50% of the desired edits, IQ would probably raise by somewhere between 20 and 100 points.

• And we have CRISPR tools that could make it happen, although there are still issues with getting high editing efficiency and getting the editors into the brain.
